Cruising and Carving
This is leisure longboarding. With the main purpose of relaxing, cruising should be the first style to be taught to beginners. Without the element of pressure, this style is the easiest to learn. Choose a location where you can cruise through flat surfaces. A nice and wide space with few people will be very ideal to learn how to cruise because you will not be preoccupied of bumping someone else while you are learning the basics.
And should you think that you are good at cruising, then you can now try carving through gentle slopes of small hills. Through cruising and carving, your balance on a longboard is enhanced.
Commuting
Longboarding is an excellent alternative to bicycling. It was already used as a means of transport way back from the time it was invented. Using longboard to reach your destination might be one of your better contribution to the environment.
Commuting through longboards needs more skills than when you go for a cruise. It can bring you to busy highways and roads. Why it is better to use longboards to commute is your ability to sneak through heavy traffic which is even better than when you are riding a bicycle. You won’t like to be late when you commute, so commuting through longboards promotes balance and speed.
Freestyle
This is an artistic form of longboarding. It is sometimes referred to as dancing on longboards. It is an enjoyable experience where a beginner can learn some sequences and technical moves. With the purpose of entertaining a crowd, the newbie learns to have better control of his longboard before he can master all those technical moves.
Downhill and Freeride
Control, speed, and balance should be mastered before going on a downhill ride. It must be the most frightening style because of all the risks that you are faced with. Freeride is a downhill ride, but some creative moves are inserted which may disturb the speed. A very steep slope may place these longboarding styles as an extreme sport because of the apparent risk.
