FAQ

What is the BiOM by iWalk?
The BiOM is the world’s first bionic lower leg system to replace the action of the foot, Achilles tendon and calf muscle to result is a near normalized gait for amputees.  The BiOM generates power during plantar flexion, propelling the prosthesis forward. Early clinical testing shows a drastic reduction in metabolic cost, which allows amputees to walk with greater economy and symmetry, conserving the sound side of the body and enhancing quality of life.

Why is BiOM unique?
Traditional carbon fiber devices return 50% (max) of the energy of the anatomical ankle. The BiOM actually produces energy enabling the user to feel less tired when using the system.  BiOM reacts in real time so the user does not have to wait for the prosthesis to respond, thus returning the ankle to near human function and reacting immediately to the terrain and the environment.

How does it work?
The BiOM uses a combination of processors, sensors, motors, and springs which provides the user with powered push off and increased range of motion with each step.

Why is it called BiOM?
At iWalk our goal is to replicate what nature got perfect, the efficiency of how the human body moves. Through years of research and science we have been able to achieve near perfect normalization of an amputated limb through advanced bionics and biomimetic controls. It’s the perfect blend of absorbing impact to reduce the forces on the body and transforming momentum to create a symmetrical gait with Powered plantar flexion. It’s what nature intended.

What is Biomimetic Control?
Leveraging the rapid release of series-spring energy to achieve efficient augmentation during powered plantar flexion, Biomimetic Control allows the amputee with lower limb loss to walk with greater efficiency, reduced stress and increased control.

What are the unique functions of the BiOM?
Powered plantar flexion results in near metabolic normalization and faster walking speeds. Real time terrain adaptation adjusts to changes in speed and terrain immediately. Relaxed mode allows the foot to position normally when sitting and standing.

What do users say are the benefits of the BiOM over their current prosthesis?
With the BiOM, users indicate less pain, more energy and the feeling of having their leg back. They report less fatigue, increase in daily activities, fewer pressures inside of the socket and more stability on uneven terrain. For the first time, these many advantages are now supported by scientific data.

Who is the ideal BiOM candidate?
The BiOM is currently available for transtibial (below knee) amputees who weigh between 170 to 250lbs.

When will the BiOM be available?
The BiOM is currently in early market release. Please visit www.iwalk.com for updated availability information or call 1.800.989.9998.

How much does it weigh?
The entire system weighs 4.5 lbs, which is equal to, or less than the biological lower leg for a person within our weight recommendations.  Amputees state they do not feel the weight because it is negated by the bionic power.

Can it get it wet?
Users should avoid allowing water and other debris into the ankle as it could damage the electronics.

Does it require batteries?
Yes. The BiOM uses a modular lithium polymer battery that must be charged on a daily basis.
